ロックンロールの誕生と黄金時代
1955年、ビル・ヘイリーの『ロック・アラウンド・ザ・クロック』の大ヒットにより、ロックンロールは夜明けの時代を迎え、黒人のインディーズレーベルからチャック・ベリー、ボー・ディドリー、リトル・リチャードら時代の寵児たちが生まれた。

ロックンロールの市場を白人ミュージシャンで狙うメジャーレコードはエルヴィス・プレスリーを発掘し、カール・パーキンス、ジェリー・リー・ルイス、ジョニー・キャッシュ、さらにジーン・ヴィンセント、エディ・コクラン、バディ・ホリー、エヴァリー・ブラザーズらのロカビリーのスターを生んだ。

 
January 1956 - RCA releases it's first Elvis Presley single "Heartbreak Hotel" on January 27th. The song would go to #1 on the Pop Charts in April for seven weeks. Elvis makes his national TV debut Jan. 28th on The Dorsey Brothers Stage Show.January 1956 - Following up on their hit single "Only You", Los Angeles vocal group The Platters take their new single "The Great Pretender" to the top of the Pop Charts. February 1956 - Cincinnati label Federal Records releases "Please, Please, Please" from Augusta, GA singer James Brown and scores a #5 hit on the R&B charts. February 1956 - New York City vocal group The Teenagers, featuring 13 year old lead singer Frankie Lymon, have a smash hit with "Why Do Fools Fall In Love?".March 1956 - On his way to New York to appear on the Ed Sullivan show, rockabilly star Carl Perkins (shown above with fans) is seriously injured in a car accident, spending several months in the hospital.March 1956 - New Haven, CT vocal group The Five Satins hit #3 R&B, #24 Pop with their single "In The Still Of The Night".March 1956 - Bill Haley, The Platters and Alan Freed appear in the low budget movie "Rock Around the Clock". The movie is a financial success and becomes a model for future "teen" movies.April 1956 - RCA signs 15 year old Janis Martin and releases the rockabilly single "Will You Willyum", which does well on both the country and pop charts.1956 - Harvey, IL vocal group The Dells release the single "Oh What A Night". They would re-record the song in 1969 and hit #1 on the US Soul Charts.  April 1956 - DJ Alan Freed's Rock and Roll Dance Party becomes the first regularly broadcast nationwide rock and roll show on the radio.May 1956 - Sun Records artist Johnny Cash hits #1 Country, #17 Pop in the US with his single "I Walk The Line".June 1956 - Elvis Presley debuts his new single "Hound Dog" on the Milton Berle TV Show and creates a national stir with his suggestive hip movements.June 1956 - Norfolk, VA rockabilly band Gene Vincent & The Blue Caps have a #7 US Pop hit, #16 UK with "Be Bop A Lula" which goes on to sell two million copies. Cleveland, Ohio's Screaming Jay Hawkins has a hit with "I Put A Spell On You" which fails to chart as a single, but goes on to sell a million copies.July 1956 - Roy Orbison of Wink, TX records his debut single "Ooby Dooby" for Sun Records and achieves moderate success.July 1956 - On Philadelphia's afternoon teen music show American Bandstand, host Bob Horn is replaced by Dick Clark, after Horn is fired following a drunk driving arrest.July 1956 - Capitol Records signs up-and-coming rockabilly singer Wanda Jackson and releases "I Gotta Know" which goes to #15 on the Country Charts.August 1956 - Detroit R&B singer Little Willie John hits #1 on the R&B charts, #24 Pop with the single "Fever". In 1958 Peggy Lee's  cover version would hit #8 on the Pop Charts.September 1956 - After winning television's Ted Mack's Amateur Hour, Memphis band Johnny Burnette & The Rock and Roll Trio (newspaper article above) are signed to Coral Records. Their version of "Train Kept a Rollin" is considered the first use of feedback on a rock and roll record.November 1956 - American duo Mickey & Sylvia chart at #1 R&B, #11 Pop with their cover of Bo Diddley's song "Love Is Strange".November 1956 - New Orleans piano man Fats Domino racks up his sixth #1 R&B hit with "Blueberry Hill", which also reaches #2 US Pop, #6 UK.December 1956 - The movie "The Girl Can't Help It" features bombshell Jayne Mansfield along with great rock performances by Little Richard, Fats Domino, Eddie Cochran and Gene Vincent.1956 goes down in history as "the year of Elvis". Presley appears 18 times on national TV, has 3 number one singles, two number one albums and appears in his first movie - Love Me Tender.At year end, Elvis Presley breaks the Billboard record with nine singles in the Hot 100 Pop Chart at once. This record would stand until the Beatles break it in 1964.December 1956 - Elvis Presley returns to Memphis and joins Carl Perkins, Johnny Cash and Jerry Lee Lewis for an impromptu jam session at Sun Studios  - the Memphis newspaper dubs it "The Million Dollar Quartet".
