1964年にビートルズがアメリカ進出をはたし、全米ヒットチャートの1位から5位までを独占するという前代未聞の大成功を収める。

彼らの成功をきっかにリヴァプールのバンドブームは沸騰し,多くのバンドが登場し,ロンドンなど他の地域からも,R&B的なローリング・ストーンズやアニマルズ,また,ジェフ・ベック,エリック・クラプトン,ジミー・ペイジの3大ギタリストを擁したヤードバーズ,ハード・ロックの雄であるザ・フーやキンクスら,一つの時代を代表するバンドが,アメリカのミュージック・シーンへ参戦した。

このような,ビートルズをその頂点とする英国系バンドのアメリカ=世界進出は,“ブリティッシュ・インヴェイジョン”(英国の侵略)と呼ばれ,ここにロックは完全に世界の若者の共通語となった。

Cohost and DJ - Jimmy Saville is shown above.January 1964 - Bob Dylan releases the album - The Times They Are a Changin'. The first of two albums he would release in '64. January 1964 - London, England band The Dave Clark 5 knock the Beatles off the #1 spot in the UK charts with their single "Glad All Over". The song would hit #6 in the US in April, the first of 5 top 10 singles for them in '64. February 1964 - The Beatles appear on The Ed Sullivan Show in the US for the first of three consecutive weekly appearances. February 1964 - The song "California Sun" goes to #5 US for South Bend, Indiana high school band The Rivieras.February 1964 - The Beatles (shown here reading fanmail in their hotel) hit #1 in the US for the first time with "I Want To Hold Your Hand". They would follow with "She Loves You" and "Can't Buy Me Love" at #1.  By April the top 5 singles are all by The Beatles.March 1964 - UK acts including (L to R above) The Animals, Dave Clark Five, Dusty Springfield, The Kinks, Manfred Mann and many others would follow The Beatles into the US charts. The preponderence of UK bands on the American Charts was termed the British Invasion and lasted for over two years.April 1964 - Greenwood, MS native Betty Everett makes the move from gospel to secular music with her #5 US, #31 UK hit single "The Shoop Shoop Song (It's In His Kiss)". April 1964 - Texan, Terry Stafford, goes to #3 in the US with his Elvis sound-alike hit single "Suspicion". May 1964 - California's Jan and Dean break into the Top Ten again with the teen tragedy single "Dead Man's Curve". May 1964 - Detroit, MI singer Mary Wells has a #1 US, #5 UK hit with "My Guy" written and produced by Smokey Robinson for the Motown label.June 1964 - New Orleans, LA vocal group, The Dixie Cups, team with the songwriting team of Ellie Greenwich and Jeff Berry (shown above with the group) for a #1 hit single  "Chapel of Love".June 1964 - Johnny Rivers of Baton Rouge, LA goes all the way to #2 with his cover of Chuck Berry's song "Memphis Tennessee". Rivers would be booked for a year at the newly opened Whiskey-a-GoGo on the Sunset Strip in West Hollywood, CA. June 1964 - UK act, Peter and Gordon, top the charts in the US and UK with "A World Without Love", written for them by Beatle Paul McCartney, who was dating Peter Asher's sister Jane.July 1964 - New Jersey vocal group The Four Seasons are back on top in the US charts with the single "Rag Doll".July 1964 - After four top ten hits in the US, Hawthorne, CA band, The Beach Boys, have their first #1 in the US with the single "I Get Around". (#7 UK)July 1964 - UK blue eyed soul singer Dusty Springfield breaks into the US Top Ten with her second single "Wishin' and Hopin'".August 1964 - Newcastle, UK blues band The Animals go to #1 in the US and UK with their cover of the folk classic "The House of the Rising Sun".August 1964 - Motown act, The Supremes, (shown above in the Motown recording studio) have the first of five consecutive number one hits with the single "Where Did Our Love Go".August 1964 - North London, UK band The Kinks redefine the power chord with their hit "You Really Got Me" which goes to #1 UK, #7 US.September 1964 - Texas singer Roy Orbison has another #1 single in both the US and UK charts with "Oh Pretty Woman". It would be his final chart topper.September 1964 - ABC Television debuts the prime time music show Shindig! hosted by Los Angeles DJ - Jimmy O'Neill.October 1964 - Queens, NY duo Simon and Garfunkel release their first album which fails to chart.October 1964 - British band Manfred Mann score a #1 hit in the US and UK with their cover of "Do Wah Diddy Diddy" which had previously failed to chart for American group The Exciters. October 1964 - London, UK blues band The Rolling Stones make their first appearance on the Ed Sullivan Show and tour the US for the second time. Their cover of "Time Is On My Side" goes to #6 in the US. In the UK they have their first #1 with a cover of The Valentinos "It's All Over Now".November 1964 - Queens, NY high school girl group, The Shangri-Las, hit #1 with the melodramatic single "Leader of the Pack".December 1964 - Soul singer Sam Cooke, with thirty Top 40 hits, dies after being shot in a Los Angeles, CA motel room.December 1964 - St. Albans, UK band The Zombies have their second Top Ten hit with "Tell Her No" following up on "She's Not There" which went to #2 in Aug. December 1964 - Elvis Presley continues concentrating on his movie career and is still a hit at the box office in the film Viva Las Vegas with Ann Margret. December 1964 - The Beatles end the year on top with the single "I Feel Fine". In 1964 The Beatles break Elvis Presley's record by having 14 songs in the US Top 100 charts at once.
