アメリカに新時代のサウンドが登場
キューバ危機、ケネディ大統領暗殺など激動の時代を予感させる事件が続発するなか、ロックンロールの洗礼を受けた若者たちが新しい音楽の模索を始めた。

東海岸のニューヨークではボブ・ディランが黒人差別や反戦運動など,社会問題を鋭くえぐる作品を発表し世相を描くフォークソングで一世を風靡し、西海岸のカリフォルニアでは、海をテーマに青春を謳歌する若者たちを題材にしたビーチ・ボーイズのサーフィン・ミュージックが人気を博し、そのブームに乗ったベンチャーズによってエレキブームを起こした。 

 

January 1962 - The Twist craze continues as Chubby Checkers' "The Twist" goes to #1 again. Joey Dee & The Starlighters' "Peppermint Twist" also hits #1.January 1962 - West Philadelphia, PA singer Solomon Burke teams with producer and songwriter Bert Berns (above right in studio with Burke) for his second Top Ten R&B hit with "Cry To Me" #5 R&B, #44 Pop. Burke would become an important transitional figure as R&B transforms to soul music in the 60's.February 1962 - Chicago, IL native, Gene Chandler hits the #1 spot with "Duke of Earl" and sells a million copies in one month.February 1962 - UK singer Cliff Richard takes the song "The Young Ones" along with the album from the movie of the same name to #1 UK.March 1962 - Chicago, IL singer songwriter Sam Cooke returns to #1 R&B with "Back On The Chain Gang" #9 Pop, #6 UK.March 1962 - Texas singer Bruce Channel has a #1 US, #2 UK hit with "Hey Baby" featuring the harmonica of Delbert McClinton.April 1962 - Kentucky country singer Skeeter Davis crosses over to the pop and R&B charts with the song "The End Of The World" #2 Pop, #4 R&B, #2 Country, #18 UKApril 1962 - Elvis Presley is back on top of the charts with the single "Good Luck Charm". He gives up touring for the next eight years, to concentrate on his movie career. (Elvis shown here in movie Girls, Girls, Girls!)April 1962 - Television actress Shelley Fabares of The Donna Reed Show, has a #1 hit with the song "Johnny Angel" which premieres on the TV show.May 1962 - The dance song "Mashed Potato Time" by Philadelphia, PA singer Dee Dee Sharp hits #1 R&B, #2 Pop. She would hit the Top Five again in December with "Ride".June 1962 - R&B artist Ray Charles covers Don Gibson's country hit "I Can't Stop Loving You" and takes it to #1 Pop, R&B, Country and in the UK.July 1962 - Philadelphia, PA R&B quartet The Orlons hit #2 Pop, #5 R&B with the dance hit "The Wah-Watusi".July 1962 - Bobby Vinton of Canonsburg, PA has his first #1 US, #1 UK hit single with "Roses Are Red". Vinton would have several more top hits including "Blue Velvet" and "Mr. Lonely" among others.July 1962 - Orchestra leader David Rose finds himself with a suprise #1 hit "The Stripper" after the four year old instrumental is used in the film Gypsy. July 1962 - New Yorker Brian Hyland scores a #1 hit in the US and UK with the single "Sealed With A Kiss".August 1962 - Songwriters David Goffin and Carole King write a #1 US, #2 UK dance hit for their teenage babysitter Little Eva. The song would also be a hit in the 70's and 80's for Grand Funk and Kylie Minogue respectively.Soul singer James Brown releases the album "Live at the Apollo" which would reach #2 and spend 14 months on the US charts. Cincinnati, OH vocal group The Isley Brothers follow up on their 1959 hit "Shout" with "Twist & Shout" which reaches #17.September 1962 - Newark, NJ vocal group The Four Seasons single "Sherry" goes to #1. They would follow with 3 more #1's and are matched only by the Beach Boys in the US for records sold from '62 - '64. October 1962 - Booker T & The MG's, part of the house band at Stax Studios in Memphis, go to #3 with the instrumental "Green Onions".October 1962 - Sommerville, MA singer songwriter Bobby Pickett tops the pop chart with his spoof of dance craze hits "Monster Mash".October 1962 - Chris Montez of Hawthorne, CA has a #4 US, #2 UK hit with the latin flavored song "Let's Dance".October 1962 - Queens, NY vocal group The Exciters go to #4 US with the single "Tell Him" from songwriter Bert Berns. October 1962 - Motown act The Contours have a #2 hit with "Do You Love Me (Now That I Can Dance)".October 1962 - Liverpool, UK band The Beatles release their first single "Love Me Do" which peaks on the UK charts at #17. The single was not released in the US.November 1962 - The Crystals, under the direction of Wall of Sound producer Phil Spector, have a #1 hit with "He's A Rebel".December 1962 - The Tornados become the first British band in the rock era to go to #1 in the US with their instrumental "Telstar".December 1962 - Columbia releases the first album from Minnesota folk revivalist Bob Dylan which fails to chart.KDWB radio in Minneapolis - St.Paul Minnesota Fabulous Forty hits survey January 1962.KYA radio of San Francisco, California Swingin' 60 hit survey June 1962.
