January 1976 - After eight top ten hits in the UK, teen sensations The Bay City Rollers of Edinburgh, Scotland finally score a hit in the US with the #1 "Saturday Night".January 1976 - Bob Dylan releases the album Desire which goes to #1 US, #3 UK and continues touring with the Rolling Thunder Revue. The single "Hurricane" gains significant radio airplay.February 1976 - Former Steve Miller Band member Boz Scaggs has a #2 US album with Silk Degrees along with a top five US single "Lowdown". February 1976 - Released on Valentines Day, the debut album by Washington / Vancouver rock band Heart goes to #7 US, #36 UK with a #9 US single in "Magic Man".February 1976 - Peter Frampton, former guitarist for UK band Humble Pie, goes to #1 US, #6 UK with his double live album - Frampton Comes Alive. After limited success with his first four solo albums, Frampton Comes Alive becomes the best selling album of 1976 in the US.March 1976 - Irish hard rock band Thin Lizzy's sixth album, Jailbreak, brings them a #8 UK, #12 US hit single with "The Boys Are Back In Town".March 1976 - Kiss release their fourth studio album Destroyer #11 US, #22 UK and have a suprise hit single with "Beth" #7 US, a power ballad sung by drummer Peter Criss.April 1976 - Former Stax artist Johnnie Taylor moves to Columbia Records and is #1 for four weeks in the US with "Disco Lady" (#25 UK). This is the first RIAA certified platinum single - over two million sold.April 1976 - NYC punk band The Ramones release their debut album on Sire Records which reaches #111 in the US, but doesn't chart in the UK. In July the band have a short, but successful tour of England opening for US band The Flamin' Groovies.April 1976 - Australian hard rock band AC/DC release their international debut album High Voltage. Rolling Stone calls it a new "all time low" for the hard rock genre, however, it goes on to sell three million copies.May 1976 - The Steve Miller Band's 9th album, Fly Like An Eagle, goes to #3 US, # 11 UK. The album generates three US hit singles "Rock'n Me" #1, "Take The Money & Run" #11 and the title track #2.May 1976 - While touring the US and the world, Paul McCartney's band Wings rack up their fourth #1 US album (#2 UK) with At The Speed of Sound. They also hit #1 US, #2 UK with the single "Silly Love Songs".May 1976 - Memphis R&B band The Sylvers cash in on the disco craze with "Boogie Fever" which goes to #1 US and sells two million copies.May 1976 - Long Island, NY hard rock band Blue Oyster Cult release their fourth album, Agents of Fortune, and have a US #12 hit with "Don't Fear The Reaper".July 1976 - Smooth jazz guitarist George Benson of Pittsburgh, PA has a #1 US album Breezin' and a top ten single with "This Masquerade".August 1976 - The debut album by a Boston, MA rock band, cleverly named Boston, is released and goes to #3 US, #11 UK. The lead single "More Than A Feeling" reaches #5 US.August 1976 - Another Boston, MA band, The Modern Lovers, release their debut album which was recorded in 1974. The band features  Jonathan Richman, along with future members of the Talking Heads and the Cars.September 1976 - UK progressive rock band, Electric Light Orchestra release their sixth album featuring a move to shorter songs. The result is three hit singles and a top ten album in the US and UK.October 1976 - After releasing the #1 album Presence in March, Led Zeppelin release The Song Remains The Same, a film documenting their 1973 shows at Madison Square Garden in New York City.October 1976 - Stevie Wonder's album, Songs In The Key of Life, replaces Frampton Comes Alive at the top of the US Album Charts for the rest of the year.October 1976 - Chicago, a rock band with horns from Chicago, IL have their first #1 single in the US & UK with "If You Leave Me Now". Creative differences in the band nearly resulted in the Peter Cetera composition not making it onto the album Chicago X.October 1976 -  Steubenville, OH funk band Wild Cherry have a #1 US hit with "Play That Funky Music".October 1976 - American progressive rock band Kansas have their first top 40 hit with "Carry On My Wayward Son" #11 US, #51 UK from their fourth album Leftoverture.October 1976 - For Bob Seger's ninth studio album, Night Moves, he records at Muscle Shoals Sound Studio and breaks into the US Top Ten with both the album and title track single.October 1976 - London, UK band The Damned release the first UK punk single "New Rose" on Stiff Records.November 1976 - UK punk band The Sex Pistols release their debut single "Anarchy In The UK" which breaks into the UK top 40 on the EMI label.November 1976 - The Band perform their final concert on Thanksgiving Day at the Winterland Ballroom in San Francisco and are joined by many guests. The event is released as a film in 1978.November 1976 - California singer / songwriter Jackson Browne's fourth album The Pretender goes to #5 US, #26 UK. November 1976 - Rod Stewart has a #1 US, #5 UK single with "Tonight's The Night" from his #1 UK, #2 US album - A Night On The Town.December 1976 - New York City band Blondie release their debut album with limited success, although the song "In The Flesh" goes top ten in Australia.December 1976 - California band, The Eagles, release the album Hotel California, their first album with new member Joe Walsh. The LP goes #1 US, #2 UK and delivers two US #1 singles.
