ブリティッシュ・ビートの誕生
イギリスではアメリカで生まれたロックンロールに触発され、新しいサウンドの芽生えが多くのロックンロールバンドを生んでいた。

マージ・ビートとよばれるシーンからはビートルズ、ロンドンのクラブ・シーンではR&Bルーツのヤードバーズ、アニマルズ、ローリング・ストーンズが台頭し、モッズ・シーンからはザ・フーが登場し、“ブリティッシュ・ビート”とよばれるイギリス独自のロックンロール・シーンが形成された。

 

January 1963 - Folk group The Rooftop Singers have a #1 US, #10 UK hit with the single "Walk Right In".January 1963 - "Please, Please Me" the second single by Liverpool, UK band, The Beatles, goes to #2 in the UK. The song is not released in the US.March 1963 - London UK blues band, The Rolling Stones, release a cover version of Chuck Berry's song "Come On" as their first single. The song charts at #21 in the UK.March 1963 - Vocalist Patsy Cline, who enjoyed success on both the country and pop charts, is killed in a Tennessee plane crash.March 1963 - Johnny Cash records the song "Ring of Fire" which becomes the biggest hit of his career, topping the Country Charts for seven weeks.March 1963 - California band The Cascades have a #3 hit with their second single "Rhythm of the Rain".April 1963 - Santa Ana, California high school combo, The Chantays, go to #4 with their surf instrumental "Pipeline". April 1963 - The girl group sound reigns in '63 with top hits for the Chiffons (shown above), Little Peggy March, Lesley Gore, The Crystals and The Angels.May 1963 - The second single by The Beach Boys (their first on Capitol) breaks them nationally peaking at #14 US. The group release three albums in 1963 and break into the top ten with three singles "Surfing USA", "Surfer Girl", and "Be True to Your School".May 1963 - Pittsburgh, PA native Lou Christie takes the falsetto chorus to new highs with his #6 hit "Two Faces Have I".May 1963 - Bob Dylan's second album, The Freewheelin' Bob Dylan, is released with 11 of the 13 songs being original compositions displaying Dylan's songwriting skills for the first time. The album goes to #22 US and tops the UK charts in 1964.May 1963 - New York City folk group, Peter, Paul & Mary, hit #2 with "Puff the Magic Dragon" and reach #2 again later in the year with their cover of Bob Dylan's "Blowin' In The Wind".June 1963 - New York girl group The Crystals return to the charts at #3 with "Da Doo Ron Ron" written by Phil Spector, Ellie Greenwich and Jeff Barry and produced by Phil Spector.June 1963 - Lesley Gore, a sixteen-year-old from Tenafly, New Jersey goes to #1 with her first single "It's My Party".July 1963 - "Surf City" by California vocal duo Jan and Dean goes to #1. The song is co-written by Brian Wilson of the Beach Boys.August 1963 - Signed to the Motown label at age 11, Little Stevie Wonder has a #1 hit in the U.S. with "Fingertips Part 2".August 1963 - New York City girl group The Ronettes reach #2 with "Be My Baby" produced and co-written by Phil Spector. Lead singer Veronica Bennett (above left) would later marry Spector. August 1963 - The Beatles play their final gig at  Liverpool's Cavern Club, where they first achieved success, having played there 292 times.August 1963 - New Jersey girl group The Angels go to #1 with the single "My Boyfriend's Back" on Mercury Records.August 1963 - The instrumental single "Wipe Out" by California band The Surfaris goes to #2 US.September 1963 - Martha Reeves and the Vandellas score a #4 hit with the Holland-Dozier-Holland song "Heat Wave" on Motown.August 1963 - Rock/Pop music TV show Ready, Steady, Go! begins airing live on Friday nights nationally in the UK. (Co-host Cathy McGowan shown above with Paul McCartney)September 1963 - Chicago R&B singer Major Lance breaks into the top ten with his single "Monkey Time" on Okeh Records.October 1963 -  The single "Sugar Shack" by New Mexico group Jimmy Gilmer and the Fireballs goes to #1 US for five weeks.December 1963 - Memphis, TN singer, comedian and DJ Rufus Thomas breaks into the top ten with the single "Walkin' The Dog".December 1963 - The surf music craze reaches all the way to Minnesota as Minneapolis band The Trashmen score a #4 hit with "Surfin' Bird".December 1963 - Garage rockers The Kingsmen from Portland, Oregon hit #2 with "Louie Louie" but are blocked from the top spot by the blockbuster nun.December 1963 - Sister Luc Gabrielle a Belgian nun known as the Singing Nun holds the top spot for four weeks in December with "Dominique".1963 is the year of Beatlemania in the UK with The Beatles racking up two #1 albums, a #2 single "Please Please Me" and three #1 singles "From Me To You", "She Loves You", and "I Want To Hold Your Hand".
