1964年にビートルズがアメリカ進出をはたし、全米ヒットチャートの1位から5位までを独占するという前代未聞の大成功を収める。

彼らの成功をきっかにリヴァプールのバンドブームは沸騰し,多くのバンドが登場し,ロンドンなど他の地域からも,R&B的なローリング・ストーンズやアニマルズ,また,ジェフ・ベック,エリック・クラプトン,ジミー・ペイジの3大ギタリストを擁したヤードバーズ,ハード・ロックの雄であるザ・フーやキンクスら,一つの時代を代表するバンドが,アメリカのミュージック・シーンへ参戦した。

このような,ビートルズをその頂点とする英国系バンドのアメリカ=世界進出は,“ブリティッシュ・インヴェイジョン”(英国の侵略)と呼ばれ,ここにロックは完全に世界の若者の共通語となった。

February 1965 - Blue-eyed soul singers, The Righteous Brothers, have a #1 single in the US and UK with "You've Lost That Lovin Feelin" - they would score again in July with "Unchained Melody".March 1965 - Detroit vocal group The Temptations have their first #1 with "My Girl" on the Motown label.March 1965 - The Supremes follow fellow Motown act The Temptations at #1 with "Stop In The Name of Love". March 1965 - '65 brings UK band The Kinks two more US Top Ten hits with "Tired of Waiting for You" and "All Day and All Of The Night".March 1965 - Gary Lewis, son of comedian Jerry Lewis, and his band The Playboys, go to #1 US with "This Diamond Ring". April 1965 - "I'm Telling You Now" by Manchester, UK band Freddy and The Dreamers goes to #1 US, #2 UK.April 1965 - Los Angeles trumpeter Herb Alpert and his band The Tijuana Brass have a #1 album with "Whipped Cream & Other Delights" on his own label A&M Records.May 1965 - "Mrs. Brown You've Got A Lovely Daughter" by Manchester, UK band Herman's Hermits goes to #1 US. They would top the charts in the US again in August with the single "Henry VIII". These songs were not released as singles in the UKMay 1965 - Welsh singer Tom Jones belts out a hit with the single "It's Not Unusual" #1 UK, #10 US.June 1965 - The TexMex single "Wooly Bully" goes to #2 US and Texas band Sam the Sham & The Pharoahs become the first US band to have a million seller during the British Invasion.June 1965 - The Beatles are awarded the MBE (Most Excellent Order of the British Empire) by Queen Elizabeth ll.June 1965 - The Beach Boys have their second US #1 with the single "Help Me Rhonda", the first single to feature lead vocals by Al Jardine (back row left). They also hit #3 with "California Girls" from their ninth album Summer Days (and Summer Nights!).June 1965 - Los Angeles band The Byrds release their debut album and have a #1 single with their cover of Bob Dylan's "Mr. Tambourine Man".June 1965 - Soul singer James Brown is back in the US Top Ten with the single "Papa's Got A Brand New Bag". They top the charts again in Nov. with "Get Off Of My Cloud".July 1965 - Bob Dylan debuts his new electric sound at The Newport Folk Festival and receives boos from the crowd of folk purists.July 1965 - Detroit, MI act The Four Tops score their first #1 hit with "I Can't Help Myself (Sugar Pie, Honey Bunch)" on the Motown label.August 1965 - Alabama native and Detroit resident, Wilson Pickett moves from Gospel to secular music and has a #1 US R&B, #21 US Pop hit with "In The Midnight Hour" on Atlantic Records. (note future rock superstar on guitar)August 1965 - UK band The Yardbirds get to #6 US, #3 UK with the single "For Your Love". The band featured a succession of top guitarists including Jeff Beck (above left), Eric Clapton and later Jimmy Page.August 1965 - Top 40 Hits from Phoenix, AZ radio station KRUX.August 1965 - The Beatles hold the first major stadium concert in rock history at Shea Stadium in New York City before 55,600 fans. September 1965 - After leaving the folk group New Christy Minstrels, Barry McGuire scores a #1 solo hit with the protest song "Eve of Destruction".September 1965 - Otis Blue, the third album by Macon, GA soul singer Otis Redding on Stax/Volt is released. The single "I've Been Loving You Too Long" reaches #2 R&B and #21 US Pop. The album goes to #1 US R&B and #6 UK.October 1965 - The Beatles are #1 in the US for four weeks with the single "Yesterday" a solo outing by Paul McCartney, backed by a string quartet. It is The Beatles sixth number one single of '65. The song was not released as a single in the UK.October 1965 - Texas rockabilly singer, Roy Head, switches to blue-eyed soul and lands a #2 US hit single with "Treat Her Right".October 1965 - The McCoys, a band of Ohio teenagers have a #1 hit with the single "Hang On Sloopy".November 1965 - St.Louis, MO soul singer Fontella Bass signs with Chess Records and goes to #1 R&B, #4 US Pop and #11 UK with her single "Rescue Me".December 1965 - The Byrds top the charts for the second time with a cover of "Turn, Turn, Turn" written by American folk singer Pete Seeger.December 1965 - London, UK band The Who are #2 in the UK with "My Generation", their third top ten single in the UK. The song fails to ignite in the US peaking at #75 on the US Pop Charts.
