フォーク・ロックの誕生
ボブ・ディランは、アメリカに進出してきたイギリス勢のサウンドを影響を受け。フォークとロックンロールを融合した“フォーク・ロック”を誕生させる。アメリカン・ロックの原点となるバーズも人気を集めた。

このフォーク・ロックを筆頭に、ソウル・ミュージック、サーフィン・ミュージックによるアメリカの逆襲は、イギリスのミュージシャンたちを再び刺激し、英米のロック界は影響をお互いに与えながら進化していくこととなる。 

January 1966 - New York City duo Simon and Garfunkel, who had broken up after their first album, hit #1 US, #9 UK with a reworked version of their song "The Sound of Silence". Producer Tom Dowd overdubs electric guitar, bass and drums to the original acoustic recording and releases it as a single.January 1966 - London, UK band the Small Faces have the first of four Top Ten hits in the UK with "Sha La La La Lee", but fail to break through in the US. February 1966 - Working with producer Lee Hazelwood and LA session musicians the Wrecking Crew, Frank Sinatra's daughter Nancy has a #1 hit in the US and UK with "These Boots Are Made For Walking". March 1966 -  Staff Sergeant Barry Sadler goes to #1 US with "The Ballad of The Green Berets", a patriotic ode to the elite special forces unit of the US Army.April 1966 - New Jersey blue-eyed soul group The Young Rascals go to #1 US with their song "Good Lovin" on Atlantic Records.May 1966 - Los Angeles folk vocal group the Mama's and the Papa's go to #1 US, #4 UK with "Monday, Monday" their second top ten hit from their debut album.May 1966 - California band The Beach Boys release their 11th album "Pet Sounds" featuring a more sophisticated sound. The album yields two top ten hits in the US with the singles "Sloop John B" and "Wouldn't It Be Nice".May 1966 - Los Angeles band Love release their debut album and chart at #33 with the single "My Little Red Book".May 1966 - Alabama R&B singer Percy Sledge is #1 US, #6 UK with the ballad "When a Man Loves a Woman" on Atlantic Records.May 1966 - Paul Revere & The Raiders, a rock band formed in Boise, Idaho, have the first of four top ten hits with "Kicks". They would go on to have 14 top 40 singles in the US, but never chart in the UK.June 1966 - Los Angeles based garage rock band The Standells take their song about Boston, "Dirty Water" to #11 US. June 1966 - The Rolling Stones return to #1 in the US and UK with the single "Paint It Black" with Brian Jones on the sitar.July 1966 -  A cover version of the song "Wild Thing" tops the US charts (#2 UK) by the Andover, UK rock band The Troggs.July 1966 - California band The Mothers of Invention, lead by Frank Zappa release their double album debut. Although not a commercial success, reaching only US #130, the album gathers a cult following for the band.July 1966 - US crooner Frank Sinatra is #1 with the single "Strangers In The Night" featuring the scat vocal outro doo-be-doo-be-doo. July 1966 - Los Angeles rock band The Byrds move away from the folk sound towards psychedelic rock with their third album Fifth Dimension. Featuring the purported drug song "Eight Miles High". August 1966 - The Beatles release their seventh studio album Revolver which heralds a new, drug influenced, psychedelic direction for the band including the heavy use of studio effects.  Revolver goes to #1 in both the US and UK lead by the single "Eleanor Rigby". (above Mick Jagger visits studio)August 1966 - New York folk scene alumni, The Lovin' Spoonful go to #1 US, #8 UK with the single "Summer In The City".August 1966 - On Aug. 29 The Beatles finish their third US Tour and play their last concert at Candlestick Park in San Francisco. Disappointed with the noise levels at their concerts and the hysteria following John Lennon's "Jesus" comment, the band gives up touring to focus on studio recording.September 1966 - Following the relase of their debut album in August, made for TV band The Monkees premiere their comedy series on NBC. The mass media exposure helps drive their single "Last Train to Clarksville" to #1 US, #23 UK.September 1966 - Scottish folkie gone psychedelic, Donovan, has a #1 US, #2 UK hit in the US with "Sunshine Superman". In Nov. he goes to #2 US, #8 UK with the single "Mellow Yellow". October 1966 - WOR in New York City becomes the first FM radio station broadcasting in stereo with a rock music format.October 1966 - "Reach Out I'll Be There" goes to #1 in the US and UK for Motown vocal group The Four Tops.October 1966 - Bay City, MI garage rock band ? and the Mysterians hit #1 in the US with the latin influenced single "96 Tears". October 1966 - After writing hits for the Monkees and Jay & The Americans, Brooklyn, NY singer/songwriter Neil Diamond breaks into the US Top Ten at #6 with his single "Cherry, Cherry".October 1966 - San Jose, CA band Count Five go to #5 US with the garage rock classic "Psychotic Reaction".November 1966 - Motown girl group The Supremes chalk up two more #1 hits in '66 with "You Can't Hurry Love" and "You Keep Me Hangin' On".  December 1966 - Cher has a #2 US, #3 UK solo hit with "Bang Bang (My Baby Shot Me Down)" written by her husband Sonny Bono.December 1966 - The Beach Boys hit #1 in the US, along with their first UK #1, with the psychedelic influenced single "Good Vibrations". Written by band members Brian Wilson with lyrics by Mike Love, the single features prominent cello and theremin-unusual instrumentation for a pop song of the time.
