ロックがメインストリートに
1960年代後半、ベトナム戦争が泥沼化するなか、平和を唱える若者たちがカウンター・カルチャーを開花させる。そのシンボルとなったロックはミュージック・シーンのメインストリームへと躍り出て、大きな変革へとステージを移した。

人気の中心であったビートルズやボブ・ディランはトータル・アルバムをリリース、さらに明確なコンセプトを主軸にしたコンセプト・アルバムを発表し、ロックはアートの世界へ足を踏み入れた。

また、ロックに刺激を与え続けていたソウル・シーンでは、レイ・チャールズ、ジェームスブラウンに続き、オーティス・レディング、アレサ・フランクリンらが登場し、ロック色を強めながら全盛期を迎える。 

January 1967 - Los Angeles, CA band The Doors release their debut album which eventually goes to #2 and features the single "Light My Fire" which goes to #1 in July. (band shown here standing on Sunset Strip billboard)January 1967 - The Rolling Stones release the double sided single "Ruby Tuesday" backed with "Let's Spend The Night Together" . The song takes them to #1 US, #3 UK in March.January 1967 - Los Angeles group The Byrds release the single "So You Want To Be A Rock n' Roll Star" a wry commentary on manufactured bands. The single charts at #29 US.January 1967 - 20,000 people gather in San Francisco's Golden Gate Park for the Human Be-In to protest the illegalization of LSD. The Grateful Dead, Jefferson Airplane and Quicksilver Messenger Service play. January 1967 - The Rolling Stones are forced to change the lyrics of "Let's Spend The Night Together" to Let's Spend Some Time Together for their appearance on the Ed Sullivan Show in the US. Sullivan is infuriated as Mick Jagger rolls his eyes each time he sings the altered line.February 1967 - The Beatles release the psychedelic influenced double single "Strawberry Fields Forever" (US #8, UK #2) b/w "Penny Lane" (#1 US, #2 UK). Both songs were accompanied by promotional films and are among the earliest examples of music videos.February 1967 - San Francisco, CA band The Jefferson Airplane release their second album Surrealistic Pillow, featuring new lead singer Grace Slick. The album generates two top ten hits in the US with the singles "White Rabbit" and "Somebody To Love".February 1967 - A police raid on the Sussex, UK home of Rolling Stone Keith Richards results in the arrest of Keith, Mick and others on drug possession charges.February 1967 - Bronx, NY psychedelic rockers Blues Magoos have a #5 hit single in the US with "We Ain't Got Nothin' Yet". February 1967 - Chicago, IL band The Buckinghams go to #1 US with their single "Kind Of A Drag", the first of three Top Ten hits for the band in '67.March 1967 - Los Angeles band Buffalo Springfield hit the US Top Ten with the single "For What It's Worth" a song about the Sunset Strip protests of the previous year. The song would go on to sell over a million copies.March 1967 - New York City band The Velvet Underground, managed by Andy Warhol, release their debut album. Although not a commercial success (peaking at #171 US), the album and the band would have a major influence on the future of rock music.March 1967 - San Francisco, CA band The Grateful Dead release their self-titled debut album which charts at US #37. March 1967 - California band The Turtles return to the pop charts with the single "Happy Together" #1 US, #12 UK. This would be the band's only #1 hit, though they would follow up in June '67 with "She'd Rather Be With Me" #3 US.April 1967 - Los Angeles, CA psychedelic band The Electric Prunes release their debut album which includes the #11 US, #49 UK hit single "I Had Too Much To Dream (Last Night)".April 1967 - "Gimme Some Lovin" by UK band The Spencer Davis Group charts at #7 US and #2 UK, featuring lead vocals by 17 year old Steve Winwood.May 1967 - Elvis Presley marries 21-year-old Priscilla Beaulieu in Las Vegas. Having met in Germany while serving in the Army, Elvis had been dating her since she was fourteen. May 1967 - The Jimi Hendrix Experience release their debut album in the UK. In July they tour the US as the opening act for The Monkees in support of the US album release. May 1967 - Detroit singer Mitch Ryder hits #4 US with the single "Devil With A Blue Dress/Good Golly Miss Molly".June 1967 - The Beatles release their eighth studio album, Sgt. Peppers Lonely Hearts Club Band. The album would top the charts for 15 weeks in the US, 27 weeks in the UK and would win the '68 grammy for Best Album.June 1967 - John Phillips of the Mama's and the Papa's organizes the first full scale rock festival in Monterey, CA. With total attendance of 200,000 the three day event includes Jimi Hendrix, The Who, Otis Redding and the unsigned Big Brother & The Holding Co. (shown above) among many others. June 1967 - UK band Procol Harum have a #1 UK and #5 US hit with the single "Whiter Shade of Pale" and are influential in the development of progressive rock.June 1967 - UK based Australian band, The Bee Gees release the album Bee Gees First #7 US, #8 UK and score three top twenty hit singles including "To Love Somebody".June 1967 - Power struggles lead to the departure of founding member Florence Ballard from The Supremes, who would hereafter be known as Diana Ross and the Supremes. June 1967 - Van Morrison, former lead singer of Belfast, Northern Ireland band Them, has a #10 US hit as a solo artist with the single "Brown Eyed Girl". July 1967 - The Grass Roots, a band formed to record the songs of American songwriters P.F. Sloane and Steve Barri, score their first top ten hit in the US with "Let's Live For Today".August 1967 - Often called the first "super-group", UK band Cream, with guitarist Eric Clapton (above right), tour the US for the first time. August 1967 - Beatles manager Brian Epstein (above right) dies of an accidental drug overdose at the age of 33.August 1967 - More psychedelic rock from the UK, as the band Pink Floyd release their debut album - The Piper At The Gates of Dawn which goes to #6 in the UK. August 1967 - Greenwood, MS singer/songwriter Bobbie Gentry tops the US charts for 4 weeks with her southern gothic single "Ode to Billie Joe".September 1967 - After mesmerizing the crowd at Monterey, San Francisco's Big Brother and the Holding Company, featuring vocalist Janis Joplin, sign with Columbia Records and release their debut album which charts at US #60.October 1967 - Memphis, TN rock band The Boxtops, including 17 year old gravel voiced singer Alex Chilton, have a #1 US, #5 UK hit single with "The Letter". November 1967 - Jann Wenner and Ralph Gleason publish the first issue of Rolling Stone Magazine in San Francisco. An interview with John Lennon is featured on the cover.November 1967 - San Francisco's The Steve Miller Band receive $750,000 for signing with Capitol Records. One of the biggest advances ever at the time. November 1967 - Following their appearance at the Monterey Pop Festival in June, The Who have their first and only US top ten hit with the single "I Can See For Miles". December 1967 - UK band The Moody Blues release the album Days of Future Passed #27 UK. Five years later it would go to #3 in the US.December 1967 - Rhode Island family band The Cowsills have a #2 hit with the psychedelic influenced single "The Rain, The Park and Other Things". The band would later inspire the fictional US TV show The Partridge Family.December 1967 - Otis Redding and several members of his band, the Bar-Kays, die in a plane crash in Madison, WI while on tour.December 1967 - Toots and the Maytals have a hit single in their native Jamaica "54-46 That's My Number". The song is considered by many to be the first reggae song.December 1967 - To show they are a "real band" the Monkees tour the US, then end the year on top with the single "Daydream Believer" #1 US, #5 UK with lead vocals by Davy Jones.
