ロックンロールの誕生と黄金時代
1955年、ビル・ヘイリーの『ロック・アラウンド・ザ・クロック』の大ヒットにより、ロックンロールは夜明けの時代を迎え、黒人のインディーズレーベルからチャック・ベリー、ボー・ディドリー、リトル・リチャードら時代の寵児たちが生まれた。

ロックンロールの市場を白人ミュージシャンで狙うメジャーレコードはエルヴィス・プレスリーを発掘し、カール・パーキンス、ジェリー・リー・ルイス、ジョニー・キャッシュ、さらにジーン・ヴィンセント、エディ・コクラン、バディ・ホリー、エヴァリー・ブラザーズらのロカビリーのスターを生んだ。

 
January 1957 - Texas R&B pianist Ivory Joe Hunter scores his tenth Top Ten R&B hit with the #1 single "I Almost Lost My Mind".January 1957 - Sun Records releases "Flyin' Saucer Rock & Roll" by Billy Lee Riley and his Little Green Men. This rockabilly classic features Jerry Lee Lewis on piano.March 1957 - Riding the top of the Pop charts with the songs "Too Much" and "All Shook Up", Elvis Presley takes time out to purchase the Graceland mansion in Memphis, in part to provide more security and to avoid neighbors complaints about his fans.March 1957 - Chicago, IL R&B singer LaVern Baker goes to #1 R&B, #17 Pop with the single "Jim Dandy".March 1957 - California singer/guitarist Eddie Cochran (shown here taking a break in the studio) hits the charts for the first time with "Sittin' in the Balcony" on Liberty Records.March 1957 - Shreveport, LA singer Tommy Sands appears on Kraft Television Theatre playing an Elvis-like teen idol, driving his single "Teen-Age Crush" to #2.April 1957 - Little Richard rips up the charts with four hit singles concurrently on both the Pop and R&B charts including "Lucille" his second R&B #1 single.August 1957 - Nationally known rock and roll DJ Alan Freed's new televison show, The Big Beat on ABC, is cancelled after complaints about black teenage singer Frankie Lymon being shown dancing with a white girl.April 1957 - "Little Darlin" by Canadian vocal group The Diamonds goes to #2 on both the US Pop and R&B charts.April 1957 - Buddy Knox of Happy, TX scores a #1 with "Party Doll" produced by Norman Petty and released on the Roulette label.April 1957 - The Del-Vikings a group of Air Force members stationed in Pittsburgh, PA hit #4 on the Pop Chart with "Come Go With Me".May 1957 - Dale Hawkins of Shreveport, LA takes his song Susie Q into the top thirty on Chess Records.June 1957 - Los Angeles vocal group The Coasters team up with songwriters Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller for their first R&B #1 hit "Searchin" which also reaches #3 Pop. July 1957 - The Everly Brothers from Knoxville, TN hit #2 on the Pop Charts with "Bye, Bye Love" on Cadence Records.August 1957 - The television show American Bandstand, with host Dick Clark, is syndicated nationally where it would run for the next 32 years.July 1957 - New Orleans singer songwriter Larry Williams scores a big hit with "Short Fat Fannie" #1 R&B, #5 Pop, #21 UK. July 1957 - Sun Records artist Jerry Lee Lewis causes a stir on the Steve Allen TV show when he kicks over his piano stool during a performance of "Whole Lotta Shakin Goin On". The song reaches #1 R&B, #1 Country, #3 Pop and #8 UK.August 1957 - Positioned as a teen idol, Canadian singer Paul Anka (shown here with fans) rockets to #1 with his own composition "Diana".September 1957 - The 1957 Biggest Show of Stars tour starts in Sep. and covers 78 cities. Artists include Fats Domino, LaVern Baker, Frankie Lymon, Chuck Berry, Clyde McPhatter, The Crickets, the Everly Brothers  and more.September 1957 - Elvis releases the single "Jailhouse Rock" to coincide with the release of the movie of the same name. The song would reach #1 in both the US and UK.September 1957 - After leaving the Dominoes, Jackie Wilson (on stage above) releases his first solo single "Reet Petite" which charts at #62 US, but goes all the way to #11 in the UK.September 1957 -  St. Louis, Mo singer/songwriter/guitarist Chuck Berry is back in the top ten at #8 with the single "Rock and Roll Music".September 1957 - The Bobbettes, a female vocal group from Spanish Harlem, NY hit #1 R&B, #6 Pop with an ode to their high school teacher "Mr. Lee". September 1957 - Buddy Holly and the Crickets from Lubbock, TX have a #1 hit with "That'll Be The Day". They follow up with two more top ten hits, "Peggy Sue" and "Oh Boy".October 1957 - The Everly Brothers top the US Pop, R&B and Country charts with their second hit "Wake Up Little Susie" which also reaches #2 UK. November 1957 - Former gospel singer Sam Cooke of Chicago, IL hits #1 with "You Send Me"  his first single for Keen Records.November 1957 - Indianapolis, IN native Thurston Harris goes to #2 R&B, #6 Pop with his cover of Bobby Day's song "Little Bitty Pretty One". December 1957 - Bronx, NY high school vocal group The Chantels go to #2 R&B, #15 Pop with the single "Maybe".December 1957 - Sun Records artist, Warren Smith, has rockabilly success with the single "So Long, I'm Gone" which climbs to #74 nationally.December 1957 - "Great Balls of Fire" hits #1 on Country Charts, #2 Pop and #3 R&B for the "Pumping Piano Man" Jerry Lee Lewis on Sun Records.
