ロックンロールのブーム終焉
1950年代末期、ロックンロールの人気スターがシーンから姿を消すことが続発した。 エルヴィス・プレスリー(徴兵)、バディ・ホリー(飛行機で事故死)、ジェリー・リー・ルイス(重婚)、リトル・リチャード(引退し、キリスト教伝導師)、エディ・コクラン(自動車で事故死)、チャック=ベリー(売春婦移送法の違反)。

主役なきロックンロールは衰退せざるを得なかったが、ヨーロッパにすでに受け入れられており、クリフ・リチャードやシャドウズに引き継がれ、次の時代の息吹を育んでいた。

January 1958 - 17 year old teen idol Ricky Nelson has a #1 album, helped by his family's  primetime TV show. In April he has his first #1 single with "Poor Little Fool". January 1958 - Elvis Presley's single "Jailhouse Rock", from the movie of the same name, becomes the first UK single to enter the charts at #1. January 1958 - After performing the song "At The Hop" on television's American Bandstand, the Philadelphia based quartet Danny and the Juniors take the dance hit all the way to #1. February 1958 - St. Louis, MO signer/songwriter/guitarist Chuck Berry's chart success continues as he reaches #2 with "Sweet Little 16" and #8 with "Johnny B. Goode" on the Chess record label. February 1958 - Philadelphia, PA vocal group The Silhouettes top the US Pop and R&B charts with their single "Get A Job".February 1958 - Ferriday, LA piano man Jerry Lee Lewis has his third Top 10 hit in a row with "Breathless". In March he tours with Chuck Berry and becomes famous for his raucous stage performances.February 1958 - New Orleans R&B pianist Huey "Piano" Smith releases the single "Don't You Just Know It" and hits #4 R&B, #9 Pop.March 1958 - Link Wray and his Ray Men have an instrumental guitar hit "Rumble" which features distortion and an early use of the "power chord". March 1958 - Newark, NJ vocal group The Monotones hit it big with the single "Book of Love" #3 R&B, #5 Pop.May 1958 - The Everly Brothers score their second #1 hit "All I Have To Do Is Dream". It is the only song to hit #1 on the Pop, R&B and Country charts simultaneously. It also goes to #1 in the UK.March 1958 - California studio musicians, The Champs, have a #1 hit with the instrumental "Tequila".March 1958 - After being drafted, Elvis is inducted into the Army in March. He serves two years stationed in Germany.June 1958 - Atlantic Records artists The Coasters from Los Angeles team up with songwriters Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller and reach #1 with the single "Yakety Yak".June 1958 - California Folk revivalists The Kingston Trio release the single "Tom Dooley" which hits #1 Pop in November.June 1958 - Jerry Lee Lewis' UK tour derails when the press discovers he is married to his 13 year old second cousin, Myra Gale Brown, daughter of his bass player. The resulting negative publicity ends his pop music career.July 1958 - 17-year-old San Francisco, CA singer Bobby Freeman scores a #5 hit with "Do You Wanna Dance?"August 1958 - Bronx, NY singer songwriter Bobby Darin has his first hit with "Splish, Splash" #1 R&B, #3 Pop, #18 UK. August 1958 - The single "Just A Dream" by Baton Rouge, LA singer songwriter Jimmy Clanton tops the R&B chart and goes to #4 Pop in the US.July 1958 - Eddie Cochran charts with the single "Summertime Blues" on which he uses overdub to perform all vocals and play all the instruments.August 1958 - California blues pianist and band leader Johnny Otis scores a top ten hit with "Willie and the Hand Jive".August 1958 - Cliff Richard hits #2 on the UK Charts with "Move It", considered to be the first Rock and Roll hit produced outside the U.S.October 1958 - The debut single from New York vocal group Little Anthony & The Imperials, "Tears On My Pillow", goes to #2 R&B, 4 Pop.October 58 - 17-year-old Californian, Ritchie Valens, rockets to fame with the double single "Donna" b/w "La Bamba".October 1958 - Augusta, GA singer James Brown has his first R&B #1 with the single "Try Me" which also charts at #48 Pop.October 1958 - Conway Twitty pens the #1 smash hit, "It's Only Make Believe". Twitty would have several more hits before switching to country music and becoming one of the most successful country acts of all time, with 55 number one country hits. November 1958 - Texas radio DJ, JP Richardson scores a top ten hit with "Chantilly Lace". Richardson would also write the hits "White Lightning" for George Jones and "Running Bear" for Johnny Preston.November 1958 - Los Angeles, CA vocalist Bobby Day takes his single "Rockin' Robin" all the way to #2.October 1958 - 17 year old Californian, Phil Spector, (above - lower left) writes, plays, and produces the #1 single "To Know Him Is To Love Him" for his band The Teddy Bears.November 1958 - The Stroll becomes Rock and Roll's first dance craze with the help of TV's American Bandstand. November 1958 - Capitalizing on the dance craze, Canadian vocal group The Diamonds release their song "The Stroll" which goes to US #4. December 1958 - Rock & Roll Christmas songs are big in 1958 with "Jingle Bell Rock" from Bobby Helms, "Rockin' Around The Christmas Tree" from Brenda Lee, and the #1 novelty hit for David Seville "The Chipmunk Song".
